Dismantling scaffolding step by step

Dismantling is assembly in reverse, but with its own hazards. We show how to take scaffolding down safely and get the components ready for the next job.

Dismantling scaffolding step by step

This guide shows the general order for dismantling Plettac-type facade scaffolding. It does not replace the system's technical documentation. Like assembly, dismantling is done by qualified scaffolders.

Before dismantling

  • Make sure work on the facade is finished and there is no material, tools or debris on the decks.
  • Mark out a danger zone under the scaffolding. No bystanders may enter it.
  • Check the weather forecast. Scaffolding is not dismantled in strong wind, storms or icy conditions.
  • Prepare a place for the components and a way to lower them, for example a hoist or passing them hand to hand.

Step 1: from the top, level by level

Scaffolding is dismantled from the top level down. First the nets and covers come off, then guardrails, toe boards and decks of the top level, and finally the frames. Only when a level is fully taken down do you move lower.

Step 2: anchors and braces last on each level

Anchors and braces are removed only when dismantling reaches their level. Never untie the scaffolding in advance, because the remaining part loses stability. Scaffolders use fall protection the whole time.

Step 3: lowering components

Components are never thrown down. They get damaged and, above all, endanger people below. Lower them with a hoist, on a rope or pass them between levels. At the bottom, sort them straight away by type and length.

Step 4: inspection and storage

Inspect the components right after dismantling. Set aside frames with dents or cracked welds, decks with damaged surfaces and couplers that stick. Damaged parts should not go back on site. Store clean, sorted components under a roof or on pallets, away from moisture. Read more in How to look after scaffolding so it lasts longer?.

Common mistakes

  • Untying the scaffolding before upper levels are taken down.
  • Throwing components down from height.
  • Dismantling in strong wind.
  • No fenced-off zone under the scaffolding.
  • Storing components on wet ground without inspection.

Missing parts after dismantling?

If some components need replacing after inspection, you'll find them in the Offer. Frames, decks, guardrails and small parts are compatible with the Plettac-type system. The assembly order is described in Erecting facade scaffolding step by step.
